More than a dozen weddings ago I thought I'd never photograph one, much less get married. I'm glad I was wrong on both fronts. Weddings are a blast to photograph, but even for our wedding picking a photographer was eye opening. My approach to covering your wedding fits into the photojournalistic style with a twist. My years in video production results in an array of images that are more like a wedding video. Capturing the essence of the event in still photographs is harder than concentrating on the classic wedding photos, but more satisfying in the long run. Classic wedding coverage focuses on situations the photographer can control like groups and portraits. I'll get the groups after the wedding, but I also cover getting ready through to the reception with an eye to photographing everyone at least once. And I'll stay at the reception. Most photographers will leave as soon as the cake is cut since they don't make much on prints from the party. Location, location, location Where you get married isn't an obstacle, I've done my share of near by weddings in New York and Indiana, but I've also covered weddings in Italy, Singapore, Yosemite National Park and Cancun. Having a photographer from where you live is much easier than dealing with a photographer at your destination. Picking a photographer First and foremost, it is important that you feel comfortable having the photographer around. I'm very good at disappearing and sensitive enough to know when not to take a photo. As you search for a photographer keep in mind that portfolios are difficult to use to judge what your wedding photographs will be like. Especially with a photojournalist. The upside is you'll get photos that are unique to your day, not versions of photographs the photographer makes at every wedding. I've collected some of my best images here, but I would recommend with anyone you are close to doing business with that you ask to see all of their photos from a recent wedding. You want more than the one great image from your wedding so ask to see how deep you will be able to go in your photographs. If this sounds daunting I'm also game to bring my years as a photo editor for publications to the table. I can help you assess photographers your might be considering, even when I'm not on the short list. . Digital vs. Film I'm shooting digital now, but that doesn't mean you won't get photographic prints. It does mean you won't have to wait weeks to see proofs, though. It is hard to beat the immediacy of digital. I'm also a big fan of black & white photography, but it is getting harder to find labs to do the work. Any of my images can be converted to black & white, and I can also shoot in black & white if you prefer. Making black & white prints from color negatives was never fun or easy, but with digital images the best of both worlds is possible. And when it comes time to get prints my site on Printroom.com puts ordering quality photographic prints a click away. I can work with you to put together a distinctive album, and I can also produce a DVD of images to be watched on your TV.
